Is Cooking a Survival Skill?

Updated by Stephanie Thomas

is cooking a survival skill

If you’re new to learning survival skills, our main mission is to become more self-reliant. The world isn’t the same as it was. The world is full of chaos. The world is changing and it’s changing fast. Adapt for these changes or be left behind.

After learning why it’s important to learn survival skills, you might be wondering, is cooking is a survival skill?

Cooking is a survival skill. It’s one of the most important skills to develop because food is one of the main pillars of survival. We all need food, water, and shelter to survive.

According to the survival rule of threes,  food, we can only survive about 30 days without food. And how do you eat food? You must cook it. You must also cook it properly or you risk disease and illness if you eat meat that isn’t properly cooked. Especially after hunting a wild animal.

In fact, cooking is so important, we dedicated an entire category here on The Survival Journal to survival food and cooking.

Cooking has different stages. Like everything else in survival, prepping comes first. You must first prepare the food. Then you can cook it.

The Benefits of Cooking

One of the main benefits to cooking is all the health benefits that come with it. Keep in mind, we’re talking about cooking real foods. Not frozen process man-made foods from the frozen food section at grocery stores.

It’s become so common to pick up fast food or frozen dinners that’s all processed that it has become an epidemic. If you buy real food and cook it yourself, although it’s more work, it’s health benefits can’t be denied. Not only are you getting better quality food, you’re getting vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats that make you feel better, look younger, and improve your cognitive functionality. Not to mention you’ll live longer.

What’s even better is to learn how to grow your own food. For more information, see our total guide in the Survival Garden.

If you’re out in the wild, on a camping trip, knowing how to cook will be even more useful. It may even become crucial. What if you get stuck out in the wild for longer than expected? If we have learned anything recently, it’s that you never know when a crisis will occur. That’s why we practice readiness and that’s why we prepare.

Cooking is one of the main primitive survival skills to master. Start with learning how to cook fish so you can catch and cook fish. Also learn how to cook wild game meat after so you can hunt and then feast. You never know when you’ll need to eat out in the wild for a prolonged period of time. Besides, that’s the best way mankind can eat and it’s how we were meant to eat. Cook and eat wild game and you’ll be healthier than 99.9% of people.
