Knowing how to purify water with UV light so you can safely drink the water is essential for survival when out in the wild. If you’re stranded in a survival situation, locating and capturing water sources is your main priority since you can only survive about three days without water.
Which brings us to the purpose of this guide, how to disinfect water with UV light.
There are many ways to purify and disinfect water, one of the newer ways of doing so is with a portable UB light, such as a UV Pen.
UV Light Water Purification Methods
There are primarily two different items that are used for this method of purification.
- UV Pens
- UV Hand Crank Models
If you’re wondering, how does UV light kill bacteria in water?
These devices project a heavy dose of ultraviolet light to the water. This light is strong enough to kill or deeply wound many different types of waterborne bacteria and pathogens.
Let’s start with the UV Pen.
How To Purify Water With A UV Pen
As the name suggests, these UV light sources are in the shape of a pen, only a little larger and thicker, but still small and easy to carry or pack.
Most UV pens run on a couple of AA batteries and have a small number of buttons on them to operate.
Prices for UV Pens range from $60 – $120.
Here’s what you do.
Put the light into the water source.
Gently stir the light through the water.
The process takes about 45 seconds.
After the 45 second cycle, the water should be safe for drinking. If the water looks questionable, do a second cycle with the UV pen. But in most cases, only one cycle is needed.
How To Purify Water With A UV Hand Crank
These are devices that are able to operate by just a minute or two of labor. Hand crank models were designed and made for emergencies when the power is out or you don’t have any batteries.
Prices for UV Pens range from $60 to all the way up to hundreds of dollars.
Here’s how you use it.
Fill the water container with your water source.
Attach the bottle on to the device.
If your particular device requires you to flip it before cranking, flip it.
Now just crank the handle until the LED light turns green.
A normal cycle is roughly about 90 seconds.

Can These UV Water Purifiers Disinfect Any Kind Of Water?
If the water has solid particles and dirt in it. These devices won’t do the trick. These methods are optimal to use in clear water only.
They can’t remove dirt or small objects from the water. These things actually create places for bacteria to hide in. So even if you perform multiple cycles with the UV devices, the water will still be contaminated and unsafe to drink.
If you’re looking for ease and simplicity. UV pens would be a good choice. Especially if you’re an avid camper or backpacker.
For emergencies and to have at home, a hand crank device would be the safest option.
