Survival Safety and Wilderness Rescue

If you find yourself lost, it is important that you understand to make it as easy as possible to find you. If you find yourself lost next to your vehicle, a good idea would be to now stray far from it. It would be much easier for someone to spot a vehicle in the wilderness than a person. They are larger and tend to reflect the sun off their surface.

Another great alternative way is to bring a mirror. This does not have to be large at all and can even be small enough to fit in your pocket. If you find yourself lost in the wilderness and you manage to see a pilot overhead, this mirror may just save your life. Pilots make sure to pay attention to their surroundings. They will notice when their window is hit with reflections from your mirror. Some pilots may not be able to immediately help you and offer wilderness rescue. They will however, more than likely, alert the proper authorities that someone needs help in your location.

Having a controlled fire that sends out a lot of smoke can prove to be quite useful in this situation as well. The best way to go about doing this would be to try and start a fire somewhere such as a hill or mountain with a nice visible clearing. The reason we want to light a fire on high ground is for maximum visibility. Pilots and rescue are more likely to notice an individual in this case. After you have the fire started, you should continue to add green brush and leaves to the fire. This will cause the fire to put out more smoke then it would otherwise. This can make your signal more noticeable.

There are many ways one can seek wilderness rescue in a survival situation. However, it is important for one to consider their own safety throughout every decision. All in all, it depends on preparation and straight-forward thinking. The most important thing you need to realize if you want to be found is your’e going to have to make yourself noticeable.
